Monuments of Time depicts scenes from war monuments and memorials in Europe, filmed
2012 - 2022. The work is constructed through a
patch in the visual programming language Max, which plays HD-video in several layers. In the patch, different parameters for layers and time are generated randomly, which produces scenes that never return.
The work explores the relationship in-between
place and time, how war memorials relate to everyday life in public space, and vice versa.
In several of the shots, the aesthetics of the monuments are in focus, a silent observation of
how European societies have chosen to remember war. The monuments prevail, until they no longer prevail, everything else is in motion.
During one version of the installation, the audience
is welcome to sit down and alter parameters of
time and visibility for the different video layers,
thus changing the unfolding of the artwork.
The patch is developed in collaboration with
Erik Peters. Cinematography: Freja Andersson
Complementary cinematography Bruges and
Tyne Cot: Ewan Golder
